It seems the threat from page 8 was not an idle one....

This kind of spell is illegal in the magical community as it's a form of vampirism. It's designed to extract all life out of a body.

Oh CRAP!! I didn't think it could get any worse! No, Selina, you're already such a great character!
I can hear the scream and the way you drew it cracking and dying out. Also, that is an incredibly evil looking spell. I see you the ring is being slowly filled up with red. It's probably a good thing we're long distance now, because I'm so angry with you right now!
Livin4thelamb April 24th, 2017, 8:10 am
@Alex M: Is it bad that this comment made me laugh...?
MJ Neal (Guest) April 24th, 2017, 2:10 pm
@Alex M: I know exactly what you mean! If there weren't such a distance buffer between
me and this cliffhanger there just might be blood! Okay...metaphorical blood...like tomato sauce--yeah. I spill the righteous can o' tomato in protest!!!
Livin4thelamb April 24th, 2017, 2:14 pm
@MJ Neal: Not to sound sadistic, but that makes me really happy. Not that you're all mad, but that you're interested and invested in the story! Ha ha.
(Although a small part of me was hoping for these kinds of reactions to this page for weeks *evil chuckle*)
Alex M (Guest) April 24th, 2017, 8:15 pm
@MJ Neal: I do believe we should form an angry mob. Torches and pitchforks!
Livin4thelamb April 24th, 2017, 8:39 pm
@Alex M: There's nothing you can do! *maniacal cackle*

Oh my goodness!!!! Is this evil or what?! I can just sense the evilness of this through the computer screen....and that scream...so long and drawn out. And that hand in the last panel---those long fingernails, the force of them. And those red eyes, and the red spell---I have to say, the red color looks even more evil than the pink/purpleish hue. And that little blurb on what Vellian is doing---waaaaaa!!!!!!!! (I did NOT need to know how really bad it was!!!!)
Livin4thelamb April 24th, 2017, 1:43 pm
@Elizabeth Weadick: Yeah...it's bad :-/
Elizabeth Weadick (Guest) April 24th, 2017, 2:00 pm
@Livin4thelamb: I could sense (and see!!!) that...Yippers!!!!! :l
MJ Neal (Guest) April 24th, 2017, 2:04 pm
Oy Vey--not good, not good!

Also, a magical community? I'm intrigued. Is magic only practiced in the Underworld where Velian is a dark deviant, or does it span both upper and lower realms? Also, is there like an entire Underworld society? If so, awesome!
Livin4thelamb April 24th, 2017, 2:10 pm
@MJ Neal: Great question! The magical community mostly stretches to the other races of this continent on the surface, the non-human ones: the Qceoo, Cervidae, and Pastori, to name a few. They are going to be introduced in book two.
And the only society that lives underground is this band of of Underworlders with Vellian as their self-appointed Queen because she's so powerful. Not so much a society, but a large band of ruffians.

I don't now how, but you managed to make this spell look extremely painful for Selina. Especially in the panel where it's spreading from her heart (nice symbolism there, by the way). I also cannot get over how much I love Velian's last line! It even sounds poetic . . . in a twisted-maternal way.
Livin4thelamb April 25th, 2017, 9:13 am
@Becky Farb: Extreme emotions are tricky, so thank you! You're right, it is extremely painful. It feels like an icy fire on your skin that quickly goes numb and you can't move. It's a nasty spell.
Also, I think villain dialogue is very important so I spent time making sure the pacing was good, and it sounded right spoken out loud.
If the villain's words don't make you shudder a little bit, then how scary is the villain, really?
Elizabeth Weadick (Guest) April 25th, 2017, 1:46 pm
Okay, so I've got a question about the evil Vellian: has she been evil like this her whole life, or if not, what caused her extreme evilness?! Just curious.... :)
Livin4thelamb April 25th, 2017, 4:49 pm
@Elizabeth Weadick: Good question. Essentially, Vellian grew up above ground with a loving Underworlder mother and a controlling, cruel human father.
The father (named John Machia) married the Underworlder woman (named Vhri Vellian) as John was a miner and because Vhri fell in love with him and offered to help him find jewels and other precious metals underground. They named their first daughter "Gem" and they had several happy years together as Gem grew up.
But by the time she was eight years old, her father began to become greedy. He became more controlling, forcing Vhri and Gem to work and treating them like slaves instead of family.
Gem couldn't take it anymore, tapped into the magic she inherited from her Underworlder blood and killed her father, believing that strength and power were key to security. Gem took her mother to live back underground, who died shortly afterward.
Gem's magical abilities grew stronger, and she appointed herself as ruler of the Underworlder. One of the first things she did was to banish most of the female Underworlders, since they typically have more magic than the males, as she did not want to be opposed in the future.
The second thing she did was change her name from "Gem" to "Machia Vellian." Machia was to remind her of her father and how cruel humans could be, and Vellian, to remind her of her mother who loved her.
Ultimately, Vellian had been hoping for a good relationship with Selina like she had with her own mother. But over time, her thirst for power and dominance overshadowed any motherly instincts she had.
Deep down, she knows what she's doing is wrong, but is so bent on getting the power and control she wants, that Vellian simply doesn't care who gets hurt in the process.

@Livin4thelamb: Thank you so much for the explanation!!! It is quite interesting, and even though I do not like Vellian at all still, I have a bit of sympathy for her after what her human father did to her. Very interesting!!! :)
Livin4thelamb April 26th, 2017, 11:52 am
@Elizabeth Weadick: You're welcome! I try to have extensive backgrounds on each character and am thrilled when any one asks.
Elizabeth Weadick (Guest) April 26th, 2017, 1:39 pm
@Livin4thelamb: That's what I love about your comic...whenever anyone asks a question, you have a very thorough answer that makes a lot of sense, and I love how all your characters each have a back story. :)
Livin4thelamb April 26th, 2017, 1:45 pm
@Elizabeth Weadick: Thank you! That's what makes a story and characters feel real.
Elizabeth Weadick (Guest) April 26th, 2017, 11:43 am
Oh! Another thing I had to say....what I do love about this page is how unexpected it is. Really, a mother doing this to her daughter? I think we all expected to see Vellian suddenly thrown to the ground, and Selina rescued by someone, and everything was all back to goody goody...but, as we saw here, that did not happen!!! I do love the unexpectedness and cliff hanger-ness of this... :o
Livin4thelamb April 26th, 2017, 11:57 am
@Elizabeth Weadick: Uh yeah, sorry. No one knows where the real Selina is or that anything is wrong.
No one is coming.
Elizabeth Weadick (Guest) April 26th, 2017, 1:40 pm
@Livin4thelamb: I kinda figured that once I had finished reading this page... :) And before, when the wedding was going on with the imposer and everything was going so smoothly with Selina gone....I KNEW that Vellian had done a perfect job of covering her steps and making everything look great....waaaa!!!!!
Elizabeth Weadick (Guest) April 26th, 2017, 11:48 am
I know as I scrolled down this page, reading it for the first time, and was soon at the end of the comic, and Selina was done for, that I suddenly had a sinking feeling...it did really happen!! What Vellian did to Selina was for real...for real REAL!!!!
Livin4thelamb April 26th, 2017, 11:58 am
@Elizabeth Weadick: Yeah, Vellian doesn't mess around.
Elizabeth Weadick (Guest) April 26th, 2017, 1:41 pm
@Livin4thelamb: You can say THAT again!!!!!
Anselme April 28th, 2017, 5:52 pm
This is interesting :)! I wonder how this story will pan out.
Livin4thelamb April 28th, 2017, 6:08 pm
@Anselme: Thanks! I hope you enjoy it. :D
